Applying for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Program
Before beginning an HDR program, such as a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or PhD, you must be formally admitted to UQ. Information about the application process and entry requirements is available on the UQ HDR application page.
UQ's English-language requirements.
Information about UQ scholarships is available on the UQ Scholarships website.
Funding
Please note that I cannot provide funding unless external funding is available.
Applying for HDR Supervision
Before I can comment on whether I may be able to supervise you,
please combine the following documents into
one PDF file and email it to
dan [dot] kim [at] uq [dot] edu [dot] au.
- Your CV or résumé in English.
- Your English-language test result, such as IELTS or TOEFL, if applicable. Please check the UQ English-language requirements.
-
Your academic transcript(s), cumulative GPA, and class or
department ranking, if available.
- Example: GPA of 3.0 out of 4.5 for a bachelor's degree.
- Example: GPA of 6.3 out of 7.0 for a master's degree.
- Any published or accepted research papers, technical reports, or other relevant research outputs.
-
Your funding plan, such as self-funding, government funding,
or external funding.
Please state your funding plan clearly. I do not usually fund HDR students. UQ scholarship opportunities are highly competitive; a strong academic record and prior research experience may strengthen an application.
- Your research interests. Please be as specific as possible.
Paper Review and Coding Test
If your background and research interests align with mine, the selection process will proceed through the following steps:
-
Research paper review: I will provide a research paper
related to our shared interests. Download the
review form
and return your completed review within one week.
Your review must be entirely your own work. Do not use AI tools to analyse the paper, generate ideas, or draft, edit, or proofread your review.
- Coding test: If your paper review is successful, you will be invited to complete a coding test to demonstrate your programming skills.
- Interview: If you pass the coding test, you may be invited to an interview.
